Living on My Terms

A Glennon Doyle quote from UNTAMED that I resonate with: “…what the world needs right now in order to evolve is to watch one woman at a time live her truest, most beautiful life without asking for permission or offering explanations.”

I was an active Mormon for 30 years. I thought the right way to live was to follow the Mormon rules, marry a Mormon man in the temple, and raise a lot of kids.

I didn’t follow that path very well. I followed most of the rules. I married five Mormon men trying to create my forever family, some in the temple. All of those marriages ended in divorce.

I have one fabulous grown daughter whose father was not Mormon and he died shortly after her birth.

My current husband is a pagan and in the California prison system for a crime he didn’t commit. As we spent time talking about spirituality – not religion – I realized that the Mormon Church no longer served my needs and I walked away from it. Imagine my bishop’s surprise when I told him that I was choosing to spend time with an inmate vs attending church.

Twenty-plus years later, I have come to embrace new interests and new beliefs while remembering gifts that I possess and developing gifts that had been dormant. I speak freely about topics that some find weird and woo woo. I have given myself permission to be strong, to make time for self-care, and to speak my truth.

You and I don’t have to agree on everything even if we’re married or related or good friends. The greatest gift I’ve given myself is that I now know I don’t need anyone’s permission to be me and to be on my path.
